Records, 1843-1983 (bulk 1940s-1970s)

Includes research notes, laboratory notebooks, lecture notes, correspondence, books, offprints, and photographs, as well as various administrative and financial records. Much of the material relates to work carried out by physicists working at Clarendon Laboratory on radar and related technology during World War II, as well as research in low temperature physics and magnetism. Among the records are: A. J. Croft's papers and various research materials, including drafts and typescripts of his "A Century of Oxford Physics, 1865-1965"; C. H. Collie's student notes taken at Warwick School, 1918-1921; his laboratory notebooks, 1925-1927; and his notes taken in 1926 at F. A. Lindemann's lectures. Additional notes, taken by A. H. Cooke, on Lindemann lectures, 1933-1934, are also included. Correspondence, in part, includes that of Prof. Simon with University Registry and Chest Office, 1941-1948, concerning financial and administrative matters including the Laboratory's work for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Ministry of Supply; J. Timm's correspondence, including reports on the Liquifier Explosion (1953); and various materials relating to the history of the Oxford Dry Pile and items on Clarendon technicians. Also preserved is an extensive physical instrument and apparatus collection (with instructions for use provided by the instrument makers); a Clarendon Photograph Collection with various group portraits (1945, 1948, 1952, 1962, 1967, 1986); photographs of magnets; and many relating to low temperature work; as well as images used to illustrate Croft's "Oxford's Clarendon Laboratory" (1986).
