This collection consists of two documents, both handwritten copies, appointing Allan A. Burton as consul to Costa Rica, December 7, 1866. One document is signed by President Andrew Johnson. The other doucment is in Spanish and signed by President Jose Maria Castro of Costa Rica.

Andrew Johnson (b. December 29, 1808, Raleigh, North Carolina-d. July 31, 1875, Carter's Station, Tennessee) became the seventeenth president of the United States after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
