The Caney Mounted Rifles Records were acquired from W.M. Morrison in 1974 October 21. The collection was last processed in 1974 December 3. At the time this finding aid was written, the papers were filed with 10 other collections in a single box. The collection begins chronologically in 1861 with a photocopy of the muster roll for the Caney Mounted Rifles and a legal document listing the main officers of the unit. The collection ends with a series of letters between Eloise Tippins and Louis Lenz in 1963 about getting photocopies made of the muster roll and other documentation. The correspondence series is the largest in the collection.

Louis Lenz (1885-1967) was a civil engineer and Texana collector. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1907 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. After working for the Southern Pacific Railroad, he helped construct a railroad in Uruguay in 1912. He served as chief engineer for the Vacuum Oil Company until its merger with the Magnolia Petroleum Company in 1931, when he became district engineer for Magnolia in Louisiana until his retirement in 1951.
