The Constitution of 1865, also referred to as the Reorganization Constitution, was adopted by the constitutional convention on 1865 Sept. 30. The constitution consists of a Preamble; Article I: Declaration of Rights; Article II: State Boundaries and Counties; Article III: Distribution of Powers of Government; Article IV: Legislative Department; Article V: Executive Department; Article VI: Judicial Department; Article VII: State and County Officers; Article VIII: Elections by the People; and Article IX: Amendment and Revision of the Constitution. The last page is signed by Benjamin Fitzpatrick, President of the Convention, and William H. Ogbourne, Secretary of the Convention. The purpose of the Constitution of 1865 was to allow for the re-admission of the State of Ala. into the Union. The document is written on thirty-four sheets of paper, bound together at the top of each page with string. The manuscript is fifteen inches in length and nine and one-fourth inches in width.
