Born in Tennessee to John and Ann (Sturgis) Thurmond, Columbus Lafayette “Zip” Thurmond (b. 1833) joined his brother Alfred Sturgis Thurmond (1816-1873?) in Victoria, Texas, in the 1850s. In 1857, he married Maggie McGrew, with whom he had eleven children. Thurmond became a salesman for Jesse O. Born in Tennessee in 1813, John Sutherland Menefee moved with his family to Jackson County, Texas, and he went on to play a role in several important military engagements in early Texas. Born in Cat Spring and reared in Cuero, De Witt County, Texas, Rudolph Kleberg (1847-1924) was the son of German immigrants Robert Justus (1803-1888) and Rosa von Roeder Kleberg (1813-1907), who arrived in Texas in 1834.
