Letter, 25 Feb. 1835, written by Robert Witherspoon from Coldstream to his son Thomas McFaddin Witherspoon (1817-1837) while the younger was a student at the College of New Jersey [now Princeton University]; topics discussed include the bitterly cold weather in S.C., continued health of "our family, white and black," a recent fire in Charleston, S.C., that destroyed the 1710 St. Philip's Church, and 60 houses, the election of William Capers as President of South Carolina College [a position that Capers never accepted], and the death of Isaac, a slave belonging to Thomas Gadsden McFaddin, caused by an explosion of gunpowder. Biography of Robert Witherspoon prepared, May 1899, by his granddaughter Frances "Fanny" Louise Witherspoon Harrison (1865-1900).
