Manuscripts of Raphael's work, reflecting his exploration of Marxist art theory and his attempt to establish a scientific methodology for art history. Raphael ranged widely in subject matter, and topics encompass art (from the prehistoric to modernism), architecture, literature, philosophy, and the natural sciences. Complemented by a microform copy of Raphael papers in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg and extensive correspondence, primarily relating to the posthumous publication of Raphael's work. Series I. Raphael's manuscripts (ca. 1931-1976), ca. 70 unpublished or partially published writings, comprise the bulk of this collection. Specific topies include: French Romanesque architecture, Greek and Egyptian sculpture, individual artists and architects (e.g, Cézanne, Picasso, El Greco, Perret), Newtonian physics, and moral philosophy. Of particular interest are his writings on philosophy, art, architecture, the sociology of art, and Marxist aesthetic theory. Many of the manuscripts are undated and unpublished, several contain Raphael's annotations and are filed with his notes and assorted printed ephemera; a number of these manuscripts were transcribed by others. Much of this material is not represented in the microfilm. Most writings are in German, with some in French or English. Also includes letters to Ilse Hirshfeld (ca. 50 items). Series II. Correspondence about Raphael concerns the effort to promote and publish his writing after his death; comprises more than 2,000 items. Correspondents include Ilse Hirshfeld, his disciple; Emma Raphael, his wife; Claude Schaefer, his literary executor and disciple; Robert S. Cohen, editor of several of Raphael's works; and publishers, editors, students, and scholars; written mainly in English, with some German. Also included are four notebooks by Hirshfeld documenting this effort. Includes extensive correspondence by Hirshfeld and other members of the International Max Raphael Society arranging for the publication of Raphael's writings in English by the Bollingen Foundation and Princeton University Press, dating from ca. 1960-1988. Other miscellaneous material includes student notes made by Ilse Hirshfeld during Raphael lectures. Series III. 44 reels of microfilm of Raphael papers deposited ca. 1970 in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, which houses the largest collection of his manuscripts. Subjects include prehistoric, ancient, medieval, and modern art and architecture. Contents listed in a 76-page inventory; partial photocopies available.
