Collection contains legal documents, financial records, correspondence, and other material relating to a number of South Carolina phosphate companies. One group of records (1880-1884) pertains to a company based in London (England) and Charleston, Wyllie & Gordon (which is also referrred to as Wyllie Teacher & Gordon, and Wyllie Teacher & Co.), and includes receipts for purchases of phosphate rock, accounts with the Farmers Phosphate Company, and correspondence, some of which mentions the Bowker Fertilizer Company. Correspondents include David Roberts (Charleston, S.C.), Joseph Campell (New York), and J.A. Nickerson (Boston, Mass.). Records relating to the Bear Swamp Mining Company consist of correspondence (1892) between Charles H. Drayton and C. P. Poppenheim. There are also records of the Williman Island Phosphate Company; Oak Point Mines (aka South Carolina Phosphate Company); the Edisto Phosphate Company; the Ashley Phosphate Company; and the Charleston Phosphate Company, which includes correspondence of D. C. Ebaugh and A. A. Vardell, and articles of agreement concerning Cedar Grove Plantation. Case records include documents pertaining to the case of Rufus C. Barkeley v. The Marine and Phosphate Company et al.; Joseph Lanzillo v. Theodore Melchers, W.B. Bischoff, A.. A. Vardell, and W.B. Vardell, copartners in the Edisto Mining Company (a case about "Italian laborers" to be provided for digging phosphate rock); Alfred S. Malcomson v. Wappoo Mills et al., a case concerning Malcomson's complaint against the Wappoo Mills, the Farmers Mining Company, the Horse Shoe Mining Company, C. C. Pinckney, Jr., and others, and including papers relating to the maintenance of Runnymede Plantation; and Thomas Janney v. the Horse Shoe Mining Company. Records of the Colleton Phosphate Company include a statement (1878) by Isaac Hayne about the organization of the company. Records relating to W. H. Welch's dispute with the Stono Mines, which "passed under the control of the Planters Fertilizer and Phosphate Company," includes correspondence of Julius D. Koster, W.H. Welch (of Welch & Eason, Charleston grocers), J. Ross Hanahan, and J. Lamb Perry (Blowing Rock, N.C.).
