Lincoln Memorial Commission papers bulk 1929-1931

Roughly 200 papers -- original letters, retained copies, legislative bills, carbons, meeting minutes, telegrams, newspaper clippings, 1 newspaper photo -- concerning the activities of the Lincoln Memorial Commission, created by the Illinois General Assembly under House Joint Resolution No. 37, in April 1929, without funding. Under Logan Hay, chairman, goal quickly became the restoration of the Old State Capitol (Sangamon County Courthouse) to its original design, as a permanent tribute to Lincoln; and support of further restoration of Old (New) Salem. Commission had 21 members, some not active. Principal figures represented in these papers, on the commission or merely writing in, are Hay; Paul Angle, secretary; Judge Henry Horner, Joseph B. Oakleaf (d. 1930), John W. Fling, Jr.; Effie A. Lansden; Mother Mary Barbara Klaholt; Miss Florence Lowden; Homer J. Tice; Henry M. Dunlap; John H. Hauberg; and Mrs. Will L. Lingle. One interesting feature is people from Jonesboro, Illinois, writing to request inclusion in any Lincoln or Lincoln-Douglas marker program. Incomplete list of other names noted: Warren H. Manning, Elbert Waller, Mary Johnstone Armstrong, Lottie Holman O'Neill, J.R. Jackson, Sr., Louis A. Mills, Charles E. Lee, Arthur Roe, Julius Rosenwald, Curtis O. Shake, Robert S. Abbott, N. K. McGill, Charles H. Thompson, T. J. Sullican, Louis H. Hanna, J. Leroy Adair, J. H. Dickerson, Charles E. Lee, Carl E. Robinson, Adelbert H. Roberts, Charles O. Otrich, W. H. Michael, and James C.
