This collection consists of a genealogical history of the Gorgas family including a family tree, biographical information on members of the Gorgas family, photocopies of photos, a typewritten reproduction of transcripts of a diary kept by Solomon A. Gorgas while he was travelling to California during the Gold Rush in 1850-51, and a typewritten reproduction of comments, notes, and excerpts of letters written when the diary ends.

Josiah Gorgas (1818-83) was born in Running Pumps, Pennsylvania, the youngest son of Joseph Gorgas and Sophia Atkinson Gorgas. From 1835 to 1841 he attended West Point, graduating sixth in a class of fifty-two.
