William Seward letter, 1852 March 25, to Mrs. Patrick.

Letter written to Mrs. Mary Patrick by William Seward. Mrs. Patrick had previously written to Seward inquiring about a treaty, most likely with Native Americans. In one line of the letter Seward states, "I do not think that the government of the United States is likely to adopt or continue any sectarian spirits in its diplomacy with the nations tribes or in its foreign relations."

William Henry Seward was born in Florida, Orange County, New York, on May 16, 1801. He was the son of Samuel S. Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward. He graduated from Union College in 1820, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. In 1823, he moved to Auburn, New York, where he entered Judge Elijah Miller's law office.
