This collection consists of personal and professional papers of Luther E. Hall of Louisiana. Included are handwritten and typed correspondence, annotated Orleans Parish election returns, typed transcriptions of articles and a speech, a photographic plate, a petition of Louisiana citizens opposing the Prohibition amendment, and a scrapbook of mounted newspaper clippings concerning the campaign that preceded the Louisiana Democratic primary election held in 1918, to choose a candidate to fill the unexpired term of United States Senator Robert F. Broussard. The scrapbook of clippings was created using a 41 cm. bound ledger, and includes a handwritten, alphabetically arranged index describing the contents of the clipped newspaper articles.

Luther E. Hall (1869-1921), 35th governor of Louisiana, from 1912 to 1916, was one of the main contenders to fill the unexpired term of United States Senator Robert F. Broussard, who died in office, early in 1918. The primary election was held Sept. 10, 1918, against Edward J. Gay of Iberville Parish, the eventual winner of the Senate seat. Edward J. Gay III (1878-1952) was the son of Andrew Hynes Gay (1841-1914) and Lodoiska Clement (1843-1933), and grandson of Edward J. Gay (1816-1889), who represented Louisiana's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives (1885-1889) and owned St. Louis Plantation near Plaquemine, La.
