This collection contains documents concerning the Bickford and Sarah (Stanwood) Pulsifer family of Ipswich, Massachusetts, in particular, Bickford and Sarah's son John Stanwood Pulsifer (1798-1866) as well as Bickford Pulsifer, Jr. (b. 1800), Ebenezer Pulsifer, and David Pulsifer (1802-1894). The material concerning David Pulsifer consists of scattered letters and documents from his work as an assistant clerk to the Suffolk County Court, and some concenring his part in several scholarly editing and publishing ventures pertaining to early Massachsuetts history. John Stanwood Pulsifer's activity as a Presbyterian missionary in New York State and Pennsylvania are reflected in a number of journals, diaries, reports to his sponsoring presbytery, and sermons and orations. There is correspondence, certificates of teaching qualifications, receipts for children's tuition (1843), and school admission certificates (1844) that document John's employment as a school teacher. John S. Pulsifer's work as a surveyor is represented by land surveys in North Manheim, South Manheim, West Brunswick, and Windsor, Pennsylvania. There is also a partial copy of The Phonal Depot, a newspaper printed using Aubaot, a new alphabet created by John Stanwood Pulsifer, and ten miscellaneous documents dating from 1680 to 1871.
