Letters written by Rathbun to L.P. Crary, postmaster, Williamsville, 16 Mar. 1823, inquiring whether Crary wishes to do anything towards encouraging a new stage line; to Chas. D. Ferris, 21 Dec. 1847, expressing regrets that he spent so little time with Ferris during his visit to Rathbun's Broadway Hotel in New York; to D.E. Merrill, 1871, reflecting on his life, his New York hotel, and the death of Mrs. Rathbun. Also, financial papers, including a mortgage and bond of Rathbun to William A. Bird, for a lot near Delaware Avenue and Tupper Street, Buffalo, 1835; list of Rathbun's debts to Lyman Rathbun, June 1836; notes of Rathbun and protests by creditors, 1836; a printed letter to his creditors regarding payment of debts, 31 Aug. 1836; and a list of men promising to pay the expenses of counsel to argue the bill of exemptions in the case against Rathbun, 15 Apr. 1839. Includes a lengthy statement written by Rathbun in answer to the charges against him, undated; two Eagle Tavern receipts issued by Rathbun, 1828 and 1829; a conviction record of vagrant Louis Rathbun for the jail, 20 Oct. 1834; and an illustrated card for Cottage Lawn, Spofford's Point, Westchester Co., N.Y., with Rathbun's signature on the verso.

Buffalo, N.Y. businessman and entrepreneur. Began his career as proprietor of Buffalo's Eagle Tavern in 1821. Accused, with his brother Lyman and two nephews, of forging endorsements, tried twice, convicted in 1838, and sentenced to serve five years in the state prison. He returned to Buffalo, but later moved to New York City, where he kept the Broadway Hotel, at the corner of Broadway and Forty-Second Street. He died in Fort Washington, N.Y. on 19 July 1873.
