Jacob Kamm was born in 1823 in Switzerland. He came the United States as a small child with his parents. He was a pioneer steamboat engineer and transportation tycoon who made his fortune in Oregon. He became part-owner in the Jennie Clark, the first stern-wheeler in the Pacific Northwest. He married Caroline Gray in 1859.
