Philip P. Hubbard papers, 1806-1889.

Chiefly correspondence (1866-1889) between Philip P. Hubbard and some of his Yale classmates; letters written by sister Anna Hubbard; brothers: John Tomlinson Hubbard and Frank Wells Hubbard; father, Congressman John H. Hubbard; mother, Abby Jane Wells Hubbard; and some friends. Of particular interest are letters written by Hubbard's cousin Philip Wells, a reporter in Milwaukee, Wis., in which he discusses reporting and newspapers, going west to Idaho, women, the value of college, baseball, philosophy of life, memories of Litchfield, and other topics. Wells later became publisher of the New Milford Gazette. Collection also includes deeds and other land documents (1806-1862) of Tomlin Wells, father of Abby Jane Wells Hubbard, her grandfathers Philip Wells and Amos Smith, and other members of the Wells and Smith families.
