Reinhold Weimar Goll was born on March 20, 1897, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1917 to 1918. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1921 and a Master's degree in 1923, both in education from Temple University. In 1930, he received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. He married Florence M. Leipe on September 30, 1919 and the couple had three children, Robert, Florence, and Richard.
