Historian Joe Bertram Frantz spent his childhood in Weatherford, Texas before attending Weatherford College and the University of Texas at Austin (B.A., 1938; M.A., 1940). He began his professional career at the San Jacinto Museum before World War II intervened. Frantz served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and fought in the Pacific Theater. Ezra Allen Frantz (1875-1964) was born to Michael and Barbara Brubaker Frantz in Pleasant Hill, Illinois. In 1896, he married Mary Lavanna Buckley, with whom he had five children, including historian Joe B. Frantz. After dissolving his manufacturing partnership with his brother Peter, Frantz and his family moved to Texas in 1900.
