James A. Garfield letters to C. B. Lockwood, 1880 May 14-October 18.

Consists of two autograph letters signed by James A. Garfield to C.B. Lockwood of Cleveland, Ohio. Garfield informs Lockwood in the first letter, dated 14 May 1880 from Washington, D.C., that he will try to obtain a ticket for him to the Chicago convention. Garfield recognizes "the peril" of making a mistake in the presence of "the frequent delegations" calling upon him so close to the election in the second letter, dated 18 October 1880 from Mentor, Ohio. Garfield continues, "Thus far I think I have made no serious blunder, but the situation grows more critical as election day approaches."

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
