The President's Advisory Committee on South Africa was appointed by University President James T. Laney in September 1985. The first report was submitted to the president on June 2, 1986, following a full year of consultation by the Committee and broad discussions about apartheid throughout the Emory community. Jon P. Gunnemann, a distinguished ethicist, retired in 2008 from Emory University, where he was a faculty member since 1981. He earned an A.B. from Harvard University in 1962, and an M.A. (1969) and Ph.D. (1975) from Yale University. In addition to his position at Emory, he also taught at the Pennsylvania State University from 1970-1976 and at Yale Divinity School from 1976-1981.
