[Subsurface response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Cruise 01, Summary of data collected from the R/V Nancy Foster, July 1-18, 2010] [electronic resource] / [U.S. Dept. of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ; BP]. [2010]

Collection of documents and data online in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, PDF, and PNG formats obtained during R/V Nancy Foster cruise 01 for the NOAA Subsurface Monitoring Unit (SMU) activities related to the Deepwater Horizon incident response, July 1-18, 2010, Mississippi Canyon 252 area, Gulf of Mexico. Collection includes status reports, data reports, SMU data management documents, requirements, and guidance, including sample station locations maps, sample log, sample inventory, navigation logs, and equipment list. Products may include geospatial data files, maps, charts and/or data plots or graphs. Datasets associated with this cruise will be processed and published as they become available. Data also available via the National Oceanographic Data Center, Ocean Archive System (OAS) database, NODC Accession 0065729 and 0069077. Chemical and physical oceanographic profile data were collected aboard the Nancy Foster in the Gulf of Mexico from July 1-18, 2010, in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill event on April 20, 2010, by the Subsurface Monitoring Unit (SMU), which consists of multiple government and corporate agencies. These data include CDOM fluorescence, Semivolatile Organic Compounds, Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), Volatile Organic Compounds, conductivity, current speed - east/west component (u), current speed - north/south component (v), dissolved oxygen, hydrostatic pressure, salinity, sound velocity, temperature and water density. The instruments used to collect these data included ADCP, CTD, bottle, fluorometer and oxygen meter along with other physical sampling devices. The CTD data underwent preliminary quality assurance and control procedures at the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC). The analytical chemistry data are provisional and provide results of onshore laboratory analysis of water and sediment samples. The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler ADCP used sonar to measure and record water current velocities and the distribution of suspended material over a range of depths. Absolute U- and V-component ocean current vectors from the ADCP collected can be used to create detailed maps of the distribution of water currents and suspended materials through the water column along the ship's path. The data from this ADCP is raw and unprocessed. Some of the datasets associated with this instrument are still incomplete and will be published as they become available. The Lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (LADCP) that the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster deployed from June 30, 2010 - July 18 used sonar to measure and record water current velocities and the distribution of suspended material over a range of depths. The Subsurface Monitoring Unit (SMU) was formed by US Federal Government Agencies NOAA and EPA working with BP as part of the coordinated response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (MC252 incident) in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. The SMU coordinated DWH response data collection and sampling efforts across Academia, private and US Federal, State and International agencies and scientists. The goal of the data collection and sampling efforts was to support comprehensive characterization of the Gulf of Mexico sub-surface conditions as well as the fate and transport of dispersed petroleum as a result of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill.
