Galapágos Rift Expedition 2011, June 8 - July 28, 2011 [electronic resource] : GALREX2011 / [U.S. Dept. of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Office of Ocean Exploration]. [2011]

From June 8 - July 28, 2011, a team of scientists and technicians both at-sea and on shore conducted exploratory investigations on the diversity and distribution of deep-sea habitats and marine life in the vicinity of the Galápagos Islands. The 50-day expedition is divided into two "legs" and includes work in Ecuador, Costa Rica, and international waters. Multibeam mapping and water column (CTD) information collected during Leg I (June 8 - July 2, 2011) identified a number of exciting targets to explore with the Institute for Exploration's Little Hercules ROV during Leg II (July 2 - 28, 2011). Nightime operations consisted of vertical CTD casts and multibeam data collection. Between July 11 and July 28, the ship explored seamounts, the oldest known vent fields, off-axis sulfide mounds, deep fracture zones, and newly-discovered vents. The expedition also marks the debut of a new camera sled and lighting platform named Seirios. When deployed from the ship with the Little Hercules, provided scientists and the audiences onshore with the very first video footage from a number of deepwater areas around the Galápagos; Oceanographic data collected during the EX1103 Leg 1 (Mapping, CTD and Tow-yo) expedition on the NOAA Ship OKEANOS EXPLORER in Galápagos Islands and North Pacific Ocean (NODC Accession 0075149); and oceanographic data collected during the EX1103 Leg 2 (ROV, Mapping and CTD) expedition on the NOAA Ship OKEANOS EXPLORER in Galápagos Islands and North Pacific Ocean (NODC Accession 0075150) - available via NODC Ocean Archive system at: http://accession.nodc.noaa.gov/0075149,0075150 ; Collection of 1305 (31.7 GB) digital video clips in low resolution (LR) captured during EX1102 Expedition Leg 2, during 13 dives of ROV Little Hercules; digital map of the cruise area in PDF; PDF and Microsoft Word documents, education lesson plans, scientific essays, and Web sites. Equivalent of 1305 video clips in high resolution may be requested via the National Oceanographic Data Center Customer Service at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-About/contact.html.
