Charles R. Anderson papers, n.d.

Papers consist of an annotated, undated copy of Anderson's unpublished memoir entitled "Georgia Boy in a Walled Garden," along with photocopies of related photographs. The memoir mainly concerns Anderson's boyhood and family in Macon (Ga.), and includes his reminiscences about his great-uncle "Willie" LeConte, a Confederate veteran, and stories he was told about his other LeConte relations, John and Joseph LeConte. There is also information on the related Nisbet family. Photographs are of Anderson and LeConte family members, as well as friends, family servants, and a house in Macon.

Joseph LeConte, born in 1823, graduated from the University of Georgia in 1841. He enrolled in the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1844 and received an M.D. in 1845. He married Elizabeth Caroline Nisbet in 1847 and established a medical practice in Macon. Because his first love was geology, however, he enrolled in the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard College in 1850 to study with the famous naturalist Louis Agassiz.
