The collection is in two parts; the Sargent papers consist of letters written to the Daniel Sargent Curtis family of Venice, Italy (1882-1922), to the Charles Fairchild family of Boston (1890-1910) and to other individuals including Thomas A. Fox. The Fox papers include letters from museum and gallery directors and from Emily Sargent concerning the disposition of Sargent drawings following the artist's death.

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), American painter, particularly of portraits and murals. Thomas A. Fox (1864-1946), Boston architect, collaborated with Sargent on the installation of his decorative murals at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and managed the disposition of Sargent's drawings after his death in 1925.
