Clergy Correspondence and other material 1929-1977 ; 1961-1971.

This series comprises correspondence to and from clergy of The American Lutheran Church (TALC) and its predecessor church bodies the United Evangelical Lutheran Church (UELC), the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), and the Lutheran Free Church (LFC). This correspondence was generated or retained by the presidents of these church bodies. It is from 1929-1977 with the bulk dating from 1961-1971. The bulk of the records are handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, but there are other records types that were included with the correspondence. These record types include topical papers and reports, newspaper clippings, printed invitations, brochures, pamphlets, and news releases. While these records are in a series of TALC president, the Rev. Fredrik A. Schiotz, there is correspondence generated or retained by other church presidents. It appears that when TALC formed, Pastor Schiotz, as the first president of TALC, inherited clergy correspondence from predecessor church body presidents. After Pastor Schiotz's tenure as president, clergy correspondence of his successors continued to be added to a pastor's file. This only occurred in a few folders. Other authors of correspondence in this series include: J.A. Aasgaard, president, ELC, John Stensvaag, president, LFC, William Larsen, president, UELC, Hans C. Jersild, president, UELC, Kent Knutson, president, TALC, David Preus, president, TALC. Condition of the records is very good with most of the correspondence being readable. The bulk of the folders are arranged alphabetically by last name of the correspondent, although there are several folders that are arranged by the first initial of the surname, as well as three folder marked "miscellaneous correspondence."
