Harry S. Michel papers, 1877-1945.

This collection consists of personal and business papers of Harry S. Michel of New Orleans, La. Included are handwritten and typed correspondence, a certificate, newspaper pages and clippings, and other printed items. Correspondence includes letters received or written by Harry Michel, as well as letters between others. Photocopies and typed carbons accompany or take the place of some documents. New Orleans newspaper pages in the collection are from the Daily city item, the Anti-taxer, American progress, and the Federationist; selections concern Huey P. Long, Louisiana gubernatorial races, labor unions and banks.

Huey Long Pierce, Louisiana governor and United States senator, was born 30 August 1893, near Winnfield, Winn Parish, Louisiana, and died 10 September 1935. He studied law and practiced in Winnfield after 1915; served as Louisiana public service commissioner (1921-1926); was elected governor of Louisiana (1928); was elected to the United States Senate (1930); and organized the Share-Our-Wealth Society (1934) for which he had national support.
