Gideon Hollister papers, 1850-1892.

Manuscripts and documents regarding Hollister's books; drafts of some of his poems; correspondence, including letters to his wife, Mary Brisbane Hollister and such figures as William A. Buckingham and William H. Seward. Letters written by Hollister in Haiti give detailed accounts of the turbulent events which took place there. Collection also includes ms. draft of his History of Santo Domingo on which he was working at the time of his death; correspondence and literary work of Mary Brisbane Hollister; documents relating to their son, John Brisbane Hollister; materials concerning treatment of the insane; currency and documents relating to Haiti; and newspaper clippings.

William Henry Seward was born in Florida, Orange County, New York, on May 16, 1801. He was the son of Samuel S. Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward.
