Henry Melvin Hart, Jr. was born on December 25, 1904 in Butte, Montana to Henry Melvin and Mary (Tyson) Hart. He earned an A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1926; an LL.B. magna cum laude in 1930; an S.J.D. in 1931; and an LL.D. from Columbia University in 1954. He married Mary Jane White on December 3, 1932, with whom he had 1 daughter, Elizabeth Tyson. He was admitted to the Washington, D.C.
