Herman Kohlmeyer was a New Orleans businessman and friend of Gillis Long. He employed Long with Kohlmeyer & Co., his investment banking firm, between 1968 and 1971. Gillis Long (1923-1985) was representative for the 8th U.S. Congressional District of Louisiana in 1963-1965 and 1973-1985. He ran unsuccessfully for governor of Louisiana in 1964 and 1971. Gillis W. Long of Rapides Parish, La., served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representative from the Louisiana 8th Congressional District (1963-65, 1973-1985). He was a member of the Long family, a prominent political family of Louisiana. Huey Pierce Long, Russell B. Long, George Shannon Long, Speedy O. Long, and Earl K. Long were among his cousins.
