Alexander Webster documents, 1733-1737.

The collection consists of four documents related to Church of Scotland minister Alexander Webster, including: document issued by the Presbytery of Hadington, 1733, certifying that Webster has completed his training and is licensed to preach; petition from citizens of Culross, 1733, asking Webster to come and be assistant and successor to their ailing minister, with many signatures of prominent citizens; document from the leading citizens of Culross, 1733, appointing Webster as Minister, with many signatures of prominent citizens; document from the Lord Provost, Magistrate, and Town Council of Edinburgh, 6 January 1737, calling Webster to be minister at Tolbooth Parish, with numerous signatures of leading citizens.

Scottish minister and writer Alexander Webster was born and educated in Edinburgh. He served in Culross 1733-1737 before being appointed to his father's parish in Tolbooth, Edinburgh, where he became a popular preacher. He was an active leader in the Church of Scotland and a devoted Hanoverian, and acted as chaplain to Frederick, the Prince of Wales, and moderator of the general assembly.
