Sex sells, but who's buying? : imagery on Athenian vases [videorecording] / [lecture by Kathleen M. Lynch ; presented by the Archaeological Institute of America and the J. Paul Getty Museum].

From special gentleman's cabinets to special collections, the study of erotic images in Athenian vase painting has been used to explore a number of topics, including questions of sexuality, morality, and gender roles, however, nearly all studies assume that the images are for and about Athenians and thus represent Athenian views on sexuality and morality. Although images of heterosexual encounters appear on Athenian pottery from about 520-475 BC, very few of these vases were found in houses in Athens, but rather were sold on the export market, more specifically to Etruria. In this lecture, classical archaeologist Kathleen Lynch investigates how misunderstanding of this erotic imagery has distorted ancient and modern ideas about Athenian cultural identity, arguing that it was intended to appeal to foreign perceptions of Greek culture. (Lecture recording may contain vase painting images of explicit sexual scenes.)
