Total amount of pension money which might have been received from government by members who served in the war of the Revolution and subsequently joined the Society of Shakers in Alfred and New Gloucester, state of Maine. 1863.

"The writer has taken some pains to compile this with care believing it may be of some service to the historian of future years." The list includes the name of the men who served, the yearly pension to which each was entitled and for how long, and other amounts relating to the investment of the pension. If the pension money had been invested, it would have yielded $179,145.33 by June 1863. However, the money was never accepted from the government by the Shakers, who cited religious reasons for declining to take it. With few exceptions, there is nothing relating to the service of the men. For example, Prince Hatch was a carpenter on board an unnamed ship. Filed with the above document is another not related to the pension. Rather, it lists eleven men in the societies at West Gloucester and Alfred, Maine, as of June 1, 1863, all between the ages of 18 and 44. Beside each name is the man's age (with his birthday), where born, the occupations of most of the men, and medical or physical problems (one had a large tumor and another was a cripple). The occupations were gardener (two of these), mechanic (also 2), and farmer (3). This was probably compiled for the same reason as the list in ASC 1162.
