The Eisenhart Awards and Eisenhart Memorial Scholarship records and related material consist of items pertaining to the Richard and Virginia Eisenhart Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Eisenhart Awards for Outstanding Teaching, and the Eisenhart Memorial Scholarship. The portion of the collection related to the two Eisenhart Awards includes mostly programs for the awards ceremony from 1975-2005, as well as articles on award recipients, fliers, and information on the Eisenhart Award plaques on display in the library. The portion of the collection related to the Eisenhart Memorial Scholarship contains photographs; correspondence, including thank you notes from recipients; lists of recipients; programs; and other administrative documents. There is also a photograph album commemorating the Eisenhart Scholarship Luncheon held on April 8, 1999 and a framed photograph of Richard and Virginia Eisenhart with several scholarship recipients .Although most of the collection is made up of items related to the Eisenhart Awards and Scholarship, there are also several items pertaining to Richard H. Eisenhart, the awards' namesake. This includes a photograph album commemorating Eisenhart's activities at the university from 1976-1981, two photograph albums of Eisenhart's trip to China with other Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) administrators in 1978, and a recording of an oral history Eisenhart gave titled "The Rochester I Know." Materials related to the Eisenhart Awards and the Eisenhart Memorial Scholarship such as recipient lists, programs, photographs, and other administrative documents. The collection also includes items related to Richard H. Eisenhart, a former trustee of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
