Watercolor artist Ralph Avery (1906-1976) graduated from RIT in 1928 and taught in the Applied Art Department at RIT for 25 years. He lived in Rochester for most of his adult life and frequently painted scenes from the local area's gray, foggy views of the downtown skyline, portraits of elegant old city homes, and abstractions of natural areas from the surrounding landscape. Stanley Herbert Witmeyer was born in Palmyra, PA in 1913. One of eight children, Witmeyer started playing basketball at a nearby church in the afternoons. After graduating from a technical high school, he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), then known as the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI), where he earned his art degree.
