Collection of 53 letters : various places, to Ian Macauley, 1952 May 17-1998 June 9.

In 1952, at age 17, Ian Macauley wrote to the 34-year-old, successful science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, asking him to contribute an article to his fledgling science-fiction magazine, Cosmag. Soon thereafter, the two met at a science fiction convention, and Clarke, infatuated with the younger man, began an extensive correspondence with Macauley. In October 1952, Clarke suggests that Macauley become his personal assistant, a suggestion that may have alarmed Macauley, since he rejected Clarke's article. In a Christmas Day letter of the same year, Clarke emphasizes to Macauley how extensive are his financial resources, discusses with him the numerous books and articles which he is writing or which are ready for publication, updates him on foreign sales and royalties, and suggests that the two of them take a trip together to Indian Lake (N.Y.). Though the urgent tone of Clarke's letters eases by early 1953 (he would become engaged to Marilyn Mayfield in June), he continues to apprise Macauley of his work in great detail. After a 1967 letter in which Clarke discusses business aspects of the film 2001, Clarke does not write to Macauley again until 1996.
