Contains papers covering an extensive period of Reischauer's life, including his tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Japan (1961-1966), and his teaching career at Harvard (1950-1961 and 1966- ). Contains correspondence; memoranda; manuscripts, including drafts; articles; book reviews; reports, syllabi, student papers, examinations and other teaching materials; maps; minutes; photographs; and other papers. Includes general correspondence with individuals in the scholarly world as well as public and governmental spheres; correspondence relating to Reischauer's membership on the Board of Trustees of the Asia Foundation, and correspondence relating to Reischauer's tenure as editor of the Harvard University Press American Foreign Policy Series Library. Material from his service as ambassador includes scrapbooks, mementoes and newspaper clippings. The collection also includes autobiographical material, including a bibliography of his work. Reischauer's wide-ranging interests included Japanese and East Asian society, government and culture; foreign policy; media and film; teaching and scholarship, including research centers; the private sector, including university relations with foundations and the corporate world; funds and trusts; commissions, conferences and committees; and faculty and University affairs. Reischauer was professor of Japanese history at Harvard, 1950-1961, and U.S. Ambassador to Japan, 1961-1966.
