Contains papers spanning Kuznets' professional career at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University, and relates to teaching, research, and professional interactions with a number of individuals and organizations. Includes correspondence, manuscripts, lecture notes, reading lists, examination questions, and transcripts of public speeches. Also includes worksheets, tables and other data relating to Kuznets' research, especially his empirically founded comparative study of the economic growth of nations for which he received the 1971 Nobel Prize. A large portion of the collection relates to Kuznets' research on Asian and European economies as well as the economic growth of the United States, Latin America and less developed countries. The Kuznets collection also contains papers relating to his research generated during his 20-year tenure as chair and director of the Social Science Research Council Committee on Economic Growth. Also contained in the collection are papers relating to his nearly 20 years of study of the economic and social development of Jews in the U.S., including the immigration of Russian Jews. Simon Smith Kuznets (1901-1985) was George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University from 1960-1971. He won the 1971 Nobel Prize in economics for his comparative studies of the economic growth of developed and under-developed nations.
