The Classics Department was formally established in 1890-1891 when departments first were recognized as organizational units within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, although the department had been in existence for some time. It was placed in the Division of Ancient Languages with the Department of Indo-Iranian Languages (later, Indic Philology).
