Old Corner Bookstore restoration materials, 1960.

The materials represent the concerted efforts of the Old Corner Committee, the Bostonian Society, and Historic Boston Inc. to purchase and restore the Old Corner Bookstore, located at the corner of School and Washington Streets in downtown Boston. The collection consists of a program of action by the Old Corner Committee, containing purchase price, projected rentals, and forms for contributions. Additional materials include a subscription to a fund raising luncheon, sponsored by the three organizations at which Mayor John F. Collins and Walter Muir Whitehill were to speak, a photocopy of a Boston Herald article, dated Nov. 16, 1960, detailing the building's history and the efforts to preserve it, and a handout, featuring images from 1960 and 1850. In the nineteenth century, the Old Corner Bookstore was home to the offices of Ticknor and Fields, publishers of Hawthorne, Longfellow, Lowell, and others, and where James T. Fields edited the Atlantic Monthly.
