RIT memorabilia (miscellaneous), 1916-2011.

Collection contains an assortment of RIT-related memorabilia in various formats, including stamps, bookmarks, pens, and business card holders. RIT memorabilia (miscellaneous) contains a variety of items promoting the Institute, events, and student activities. Items include business card holders, stamps, parking permit, calendars, bookmarks, and pens. Items commemorate the RIT tiger, 1958 Senior Banquet, RIT American College of Management and Technology in Zagreb and Dubrovnik, and 2003 Gospel Fest. The oldest item in the collection is a small plaque from 1916, "A Student a Year to MI" (Mechanics Institute), donated by Marie Fennell (class of 1916). Last, a framed memorabilia case holds numerous buttons, keychains, and a miniature brick from the RIT campus.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. There are several other instances of African American students attending the school during the early 20th century as well...
