Alaska Road Commission collection, 1905-1956.

The Alaska Road Commission Collection consists of a brief sketch of the commission's history and copies of miscellaneous materials relating to its activities. These include a 1905 letter from Wilds P. Richardson, president of the commission, to the Military Secretary of the Army recommending that a company of engineer troops be stationed at Valdez to work on the military trail between Valdez and Fairbanks; two letters and a court-martial order concerning Lt. Samuel C. Orchard, accused of embezzling funds from the commission (1911--1912); two presidential letters concerning funding for Road Commission projects (1937); and the commission's annual report for 1940. The collection also includes a series of 422 photographs depicting Road Commission work in Southcentral Alaska, primarily in the late 1920s through mid 1930s. Subjects include construction activities on the Richardson Highway, Gulkana-Chisana Road, Robe River Road, and Kotsina Road; landscapes and roadhouses found along the roadways; and some aerial views.

This collection records the construction of roads, trails and bridges in Alaska from approximately 1909-1959. The Alaska Road Commission was established in 1905 as a board of the U.S. War Department where it remained until 1932. Many of Alaska's oldest highways are named for officers of the early Road Commission: Valdez-Chitina-Fairbanks military road was renamed the Richardson Highway for Brig. Gen. Wilds P.
