It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Newby Ely has been an avid collector of film memorabilia for the past 40 years, amassing a private collection of thousands of items, including scripts, lobby cards and posters. After reading John Schuchman's "Hollywood Speaks: Deafness and the Film Entertainment Industry" and taking his course in the early 2000s, Ely started collecting Deaf-related film memorabilia and video recordings.
