Edward Scouten papers, 1914-1988.

The Edward Scouten papers includes his published papers, lectures, research, curriculum plans, correspondence, awards, and collected books, and give a broad overview of his professional life. Topics covered include his service in the United States Army Medical Department in World War II as well as his teaching career at Rochester School for the Deaf, Gallaudet, Louisiana and Florida Schools for the Deaf, and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology. A lesser amount of material covers Scouten's personal life. This includes photographs and his life after his retirement in 1985.

Edward Scouten was a teacher, author and lifelong educator of the deaf. Scouten taught for twenty years at Gallaudet University, was principal at the Louisiana and Florida schools for the deaf, and then taught English at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID). While at NTID, Scouten wrote his seminal text, "Turning Points in the Education of Deaf People." He retired from NTID in 1985.
