It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Watercolor artist Ralph Avery (1906-1976) graduated from RIT in 1928 and taught in the Applied Art Department at RIT for 25 years. He lived in Rochester for most of his adult life and frequently painted scenes from the local area's gray, foggy views of the downtown skyline, portraits of elegant old city homes, and abstractions of natural areas from the surrounding landscape.
