RIT Photographic Document Project, 2008.

The RIT Photographic Document project contains the work of School of Photographic Arts students. This documentary photographic survey captured RIT, its environs, community, and activities. The collection contains photographs by members of a freshman Photographic Arts course and an upper-level Fine Art Photography class documenting student life at RIT in the Spring quarter, 2008. This project was displayed at the IMAGINE RIT: Innovation + Creativity Festival on May 3, 2008. This project was coordinated by Becky Simmons, Archivist, Dan Larkin, Fine Arts undergraduate chair, and Therese Mulligan, MFA Coordinator. This collection includes student work by: Michael Conti, Tyler Lewis, Andrea Donadio and Dan Boardman, Madelynn Kruckow, Julia Sampson, Mathew A. Isak, Bob Whitney, and Kurt Heumiller.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. There are several other instances of African American students attending the school during the early 20th century as well...
