Includes portraits of Alexis von Schmidt, Edward von Schmidt, Alfred von Schmidt, Samuel von Schmidt and other family members. Also includes photographs depicting Edward's sailboat, Whirlwind, as well as boating scenes on San Francisco Bay; carte-de-visite and other portraits of various persons, mostly unidentified; and one composite photograph of a drawing of the dynamiting of Blossom Rock in San Francsico Bay and portraits of various figures -- including Alexis, Edward, Alfred, Julius and Walter von Schmidt -- associated with the event.

Morris Badt was born in Schwersenz, Posen, Germany in 1830. He emigrated to New York in 1847 and moved to San Francsico in 1851, where he established a mercantile business. He later established businesses in Elko and Wells, Nevada. He married Lena Posener in 1868. Badt died in San Francisco in 1899. Mirel Lipshuetz Badt was the stepmother of Morris Badt. Alexis von Schmidt, a Prussian, in 1849 came to Calif. He surveyed the border of Calif. in 1856, and again from 1873 to 1875, headed the team to blow up Blossom Rock in the San Francisco Bay and owned the Lake Tahoe and San Francisco Water Works Company. Alexis von Schmidt died May 26, 1906. Edward von Schmidt, son of Alexis, was a sailor and engineer.
