Willis Kirk collection, [graphic] 1950-2007.

The collection consists of two photographs and one newsletter. One image, ca. 1950s, is of an inside scene of Henri's Cafe Lounge, a club located at 408 Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis owned by Henry Vance. The musicians pictured are Wes Montgomery on guitar, Willis Kirk on drums, Monk Montgomery on bass, and Buddy Montgomery on piano. The second image is of Willis Kirk on drums during a Tribute to Max Roach concert at the San Diego Rivera Theatre located at the City College of San Francisco on December 11, 2007. Volume 22, no. 19 (Dec. 17-23, 2007) of the newsletter, City Currents is included in the collection.

Willis Kirk grew up in Indianapolis. He taught in the Indianapolis public schools for twelve years. In the late 1960s, he moved to Oakland, California where he was a teacher. During his time in Indiana and California, he performed in many professional musical events. He performed with Lionel Hampton, J.J. Johnson, Jimmie Coe, Slide Hampton, Earl Hines, Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Harris, Charlie Parker, Wes, Monk, and Buddy Montgomery among others. He wrote and recorded the jazz oratorio, "Rejoice! R...
