In Shenango, classes were first offered in 1961 at the Hickory Township High School. In 1968, the Shenango Center was relocated to the junior high school at Farrell. For the first year there the Center shared occupancy of the building, but thereafter it was solely the property of the Shenango Center. Bill Utley was the first director of the Center. Dr. Clair J. Butterfield received his Ph. D. from the University of Iowa in 1945. In 1946 he was appointed to the faculty at Edinboro State Teachers College, eventually becoming chair of the school's Department of Education. He became acting President of Edinboro State College in March 1966 after the death of acting president Harry W. Earlley. He served in that capacity until September 1966 when Chester T.
