William Hull papers, 1797-1814

This collection contains papers concerned with the sale of the lands of the New England Mississippi Land Company to the United States, settlement of its claims against the government, and settlement of General Hull's claims as the last surviving Trustee. They relate to the Supreme Court case, Fletcher vs. Peck, in 1810, and collateral Yazoo cases. In addition to correspondence there are a number of legal documents and extracts from the Minutes of the Board of Directors of the New England Mississippi Land Company, 1813-1814. Enclosed with one of the papers is a printed pamphlet, Articles of Association and Agreement, Constituting the New England Mississippi Land Company, As Amended March 12, 1798 (n.p., n.d.) 9 p. The document of January 31, 1803 is General Hull's Power of Attorney to John Peck. Many of Gen. Hull's letters are rough drafts retained copies, with more than one version of some of them. Among correspondents are Joshua B. Bond, Benjamin Joy, Perez Morton, Henry Newman, Directors of the New England Mississippi Land Company.

William Hull (1753-1825) was a lawyer and a soldier. He served in the Revolutionary War and afterwards in the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Brigadier-General. In 1805 he was appointed Governor of the Michigan Territory. In 1812 he was court-martialed and cashiered from the Army because of the failure of his campaign into Canada against the British.
