William Bingham was born on April 8, 1752 in Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, class of 1768 and went on to become a founder and director of the Pennsylvania Bank (later known as the Bank of North America). Bingham was also a trustee of Dickinson College and president of the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Company. Davies is a professor American history at the University of Utah. He is the author of "The anthracite aristocracy: leadership and social change in the hard coal regions of northeastern Pennsylvanis, 1800-1930" and "The United States in world history."
